About us

For over 60 years now, guests have been coming to stay with us.

That makes us just a little bit proud. Our “Valbella”, as it has been called from the very beginning, is older at heart than its exterior and interior might suggest. A great deal of work has gone into the Valbella – and time has never stood still.

The name

So why is our house called “Valbella”?

Sepp Tschofen – Josef’s dad and Ruth’s father-in-law – saw a lot of the world; after all, he ran his own travel company. In elegant coaches he took the many “summer visitors” on lovely trips to the neighbouring countries.

One place he particularly loved was the village of Valbella in Switzerland. Whenever he came back home, he would say that one day he would name his house after it. And that is how our house came to be called “Valbella” – right from the very start.

Olga & Sepp

Very special hosts – and many a little schnapps.

Josef’s parents, Olga and Sepp Tschofen, did a great deal to shape the hospitality of the house and were very special hosts, full of joy and warmth. Many of our regular guests still remember those days fondly.

Olga took care of everything in the house – a good, hearty breakfast mattered a lot to her, and she always had a sympathetic ear for every guest. She didn’t just keep the house in good shape, she was a real jack of all trades: taxi driver, secretary and an excellent cook. She turned 90 in 2023; in the summer of 2024 her life came to a close.

Sepp was always on the go and, as we say in the Montafon, “omtuanig” – busy with all sorts of things and open to anything new. He was a mountain and ski guide (one of the first!), a haulage contractor, an earthworks contractor, a travel and taxi operator and the head of the ski school. He loved telling our guests about his adventures. He passed away in 2014.

Today

In 2008 we took over the Valbella.

Apartments, rooms, the entrance area, the breakfast room – slowly but surely, everything was renewed and brought up to today’s standards. In 2021 the sauna area was renovated and an old garage was converted into the yoga room.

In 2012 we became parents to Laurenz – he keeps us, and sometimes our guests too, on our toes. Our family is completed by Ben the Labrador, who also loves to join our guests on hikes.

To this day, we love having guests from all over the world, looking after them with personal tips and plenty of treats, and showing them the most beautiful corners of the Montafon. We look forward to seeing you again – or meeting you for the first time – here in the “Muntafu”, as the valley is called in our dialect.
